Nanfuko: He nearly killed me

For Charles Nanfuko, a security guard in New Naperi in Blantyre, being alive today is a testimony worth sharing after escaping a hellfire of bullets on a September night he would rather forget.

Nanfuko said the gun that discharged the bullets belonged to Chikhulupiliro Chanthunya, brother to murder fugitive Misozi Chanthunya.

It all began around 1:20am when the sliding gate of the house where he works failed to open when Chanthunya, who was driving a pick-up truck, wanted to enter the house to visit a friend.

“Because the gate is faulty, we have to use a rock to stabilise it. But on this night, because of storms the rock could not hold the gate and it ended up hitting Chanthunya’s vehicle.

“This infuriated Chanthunya who walked out of the vehicle and began shouting at me as he held a gun in his hands. Then he aimed the gun at me, but a woman who was in the house rushed to the gate and grabbed him.

“Because the woman had held him, Chanthunya failed to aim the gun at me accurately, so the bullets missed me after he had fired twice,” narrated Nanfuko.

He said he ran for his life and hid until the day broke before reporting the matter to Ginnery Corner Police Unit.

Nanfuko said he was referred to Blantyre Police Station. He mentioned a Msusa and Median as the detectives working on the case.

The case was opened and registered as Bt/Cr/107/09/2013.

Nanfuko complained that up to now there has been no movement on the case.

“I think the lack of action on the case is because the one who committed the crime is somehow related to [some big people] and I am just a poor guard, so it is hard for a person such as me to get justice,” he said.

National Police public relations officer Rhoda Manjolo confirmed receiving a complaint from Nanfuko.

Manjolo said Chanthunya was arrested over the matter. She refused to discuss the issue further, saying officers are investigating the matter.

Police sources told Nation on Sunday that Chanthunya did not spend time in a holding cell as he was granted police bail after giving his version of the events.

The sources wondered why the suspect was granted police bail in such a serious case.

Chanthunya could not be reached for comment.

Misozi Chanthunya murdered Linda Gasa & concealed her body under a bath tub at his lake resort in Mangochi. He fled to SA, got arrested but can’t be indicted to Malawi to face the law.
His brother, Andekuche Chanthunya, just a weekend or so ago had his wedding hosted at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe & President Joyce Banda was in attendance as a relation to the groom!
This time, Chikhulupiriro Chanthunya gunfires twice at a guard! It’s a family of killers/murderers but have an Auntie occupying State House.
If we don’t vote her out of power, many more lives are at risk of extermination. Have you registered? If yes, then together we can outgun the Chanthunyas in a bloodless victory! I am registered and READY.

  2. Nganga, stop peddling lies. Andekuche Chanthunya is not a brother to Misozi. Check your facts. Andekuche is a nephew to the President while the other Chathunyas are not directly related to her.

  5. Does “2013” indicate the year the incident occurred? And for two years, the case has not been brought to a conclusion?
This is very shameful, and Mr Nanfuko is right to complain to the media, like this. The MPS should demonstrate that he is wrong in his allegation, by taking this case to the end.
Perhaps the Commissioner himself should get involved; if we are to rebuild public confidence in the system.
